In short: The Lex EST6R23FT is a 23-foot molded Edison "orchestra string" extension cord built for music stand lights in orchestra pits. It has a NEMA 5-15 plug and six NEMA 5-15 receptacles spaced about 4 ft 8 in apart along black #12/3 STOOW cord, so there's an outlet at every stand. Each clear receptacle has an orange LED that lights when the cord is powered. It is cULus Listed and weighs about 7 lbs.

Made for the pit

Why choose the Lex EST6R23FT orchestra string?

A row of music stands usually means a tangle of stand-light cords and power strips under musicians' feet. The EST6R23FT puts an outlet roughly every stand width along one cord, so each stand light plugs in right where it sits. One cord replaces the tangle, and the lighted receptacles show it's live even in a dark pit.

Close receptacle spacing

Six receptacles about 4 ft 8 in apart line up with a row of music stands, chairs or workstations, eliminating cluttered plug-in points.

Lighted receptacles

Orange LED indicators in the receptacles and connector confirm at a glance that the cord is powered, even in a dark pit or backstage.

Heavy-duty STOOW jacket

The #12/3 STOOW jacket resists abrasion and crushing, so it holds up to chair legs, feet and rolling cases.

Molded connectors

Durable molded male and female connectors give long-lasting strain relief through nightly setup and strike.

Compact and light

At 23 feet and about 7 lbs, it's easy to coil, carry and store with the rest of the pit gear.

Pit, stage & set

Where is the Lex EST6R23FT used?

Lex recommends the EST6R23FT for music stand lights in orchestra pits. Its close spacing also works anywhere a short row of devices needs power:

  • Orchestra pits, with one outlet per music stand light
  • Worship band and choir risers, powering stand lights, pedalboards and monitors
  • Rehearsal halls and band rooms, with power along a row of chairs
  • Broadway-style and touring pit setups that strike and set up every night
  • Video village and DIT tables, with monitors and chargers in a tight row
  • Hair, makeup and wardrobe stations, giving each mirror its own outlet

Using it safely

How much can you plug into the EST6R23FT?

All six receptacles share one circuit, so the limit is the total load, not the number of outlets. LED music stand lights draw very little, so a full row is usually only a small fraction of the cord's capacity.

  1. Add up everything you'll plug in. The combined draw of all six receptacles must stay within 15A, the rating of the NEMA 5-15 plug and receptacles, and within the breaker feeding the cord.
  2. Plan for continuous loads. 15A at 120V is about 1,800W. Many electricians keep continuous loads to 80%, about 12A or 1,440W.
  3. Lay it along the row. Run the cord behind the stands or chairs, uncoiled, and keep it out of walkways and aisles.
  4. Check the lights. Lit receptacles confirm power. If a receptacle stays dark, check the source outlet and breaker first.
  5. Tape or cover it down. Secure the cord where performers or crew walk so no one trips in the dark.

Follow your local code and venue rules.

Questions

Lex EST6R23FT frequently asked questions

What is the Lex EST6R23FT?

The Lex EST6R23FT is a 23-foot molded extension cord, often called an orchestra string, with a NEMA 5-15 Edison plug and six lighted NEMA 5-15 receptacles spaced about 4 feet 8 inches apart. It uses black #12/3 STOOW cord, weighs about 7 lbs and is cULus Listed.

What is an orchestra string?

An orchestra string is a multi-outlet extension cord with receptacles spaced along its length so each music stand light in a row can plug in where it sits. It replaces a tangle of separate cords and power strips in an orchestra pit.

How far apart are the receptacles on the EST6R23FT?

The six receptacles are spaced about 4 feet 8 inches apart, which lines up with a row of music stands or chairs.

How many music stand lights can I plug in?

All six receptacles can be used. The combined load must stay within 15A, the rating of the NEMA 5-15 plug and receptacles, and within the breaker feeding the cord. LED music stand lights draw very little power, so six stand lights use only a small fraction of that.

What do the orange lights on the receptacles mean?

The orange LED indicators light up when the cord is powered. They give a quick visual check that power is present, even in a dark orchestra pit or backstage area.

What cord does the EST6R23FT use?

It uses black #12/3 STOOW cord. The heavy-duty jacket resists abrasion and crushing, and STOOW cord is oil resistant and rated for outdoor use.

Is the Lex EST6R23FT UL listed?

Yes. The EST6R23FT is cULus Listed for use in the United States and Canada.

Does Lex make longer versions?

Yes. The EST3R25FT has three receptacles on 25 feet of cord spaced about 8 feet 6 inches apart, and the EST6R50FT has six receptacles on 50 feet spaced about 10 feet apart.
