Kino Flo Select 30 DMX LED Light Kit (2) Unit

NOW with RGB Full Color

If your looking for an LED light kit to replace the Kino Flo Gaffer Kit 4x4 Fluorescents, this is the one! A similar form factor, but just a little bit smaller and now BiColor and RGB Full Color, so no tubes to change, carry, break or buy. Super-soft, variable color temperature and a magenta / green correction, now get perfect camera color match from an LED light source. Get two Select LED 30 systems in one rolling case that weighs just 69 pounds and will fit in most hatchbacks with case dimensions of 43.5" x 13" x 18.5". The Kino Flo Select 30 provides a natural, wrapping light source. Just beautiful for portraits as a key light or as an overall fill light. The Select is just 3" deep, so it is easy to tuck into tight spaces, up against a wall or ceiling. The LED Controller (power supply) can be used attached to fixture (for moving quickly) or detached (for saving weight while hanging or booming). The new curved mount with baby receiver allows for the Select 30 LED to point straight down while mounted on a stand. Features DMX and Wireless Dimming with Lumen Radio receiver built in.

Now get tungsten 2500K to daylight 9900K with Kino Flo's new Select 30 LED. In addition, a new firmware upgrade (available in Jan. 2017) will bring full color / rgb ability to the Select 30 DMX LED light. The new "color menu" on the 4th channel allows for selecting pre-set gels including Candle Flame, Warm White, Cool White, Sodium Vapor, Mercury Vapor, 20K Blue Sky, Green Screen and Blue screen and 105 additional lighting gels. Even more impressive, the Select LED has a 5th channel HUE ANGLE and 6th channel SATURATION for fine tuning any color.

Most versatile LED luminaire to date.
January 31, 2017
Since the introduction of LED's into film making I've been purchasing a few units from different manufacturers to see what works and try new instruments as the tech kept evolving. With the new Kino Select series of LED, the market hit a plateau.

This lighting unit replaces all previous KinoFlo fluorescents in the 2-4' T-10 tubes styles as well as the Divas, parabeam and any other KF55 style tubes.

The Select 30's performed wonderfully on a recent feature film. I found them to be as bright as a 4' 4 bank with none of the downsides. On the face of the LED diffusion panel is a lip. The 90 degree grid fits into this lip perfectly and creates a 100% leak free light modifier. No more rushing to find black wrap to slam an end cap on the old 4 bank.

The color profile truly is incredible. When Arri first introduced the color change fresnels a few years back I was skeptical. Well I'm sold. Ow. The utility of the variable colors is beyond what I thought would be useful. This is not some gimmick. I can dial in to match most any existing environmental color palet. In a few seconds I created a match to a neon beer sign in a bar scene that carried the neon glow onto an actor lurking in the entry way. Matching sodium vapor couldn't be simpler with variants of bastard amber programmed into the ballast controller. Countless times I used the plus green ability to match some older soft white tubes in a school gymnasium and the list of uses goes on.

The transformer layout is great. They did it right on the Select. With my old Divas and parabeams I like having an onboard ballast and dimmer for speed of setup and smaller hack pack but of course it also weighted down the head. Now you can mount or remotely control the luminaire. So useful when the head is maxed on the stand and the DP can just talk you in with the settings while the light is at full height and you're not on a ladder 12' up.

The slightly smaller footprint is surprisingly useful. For the gain in transport and storage Vs the loss in surface area I don't feel like there is any appreciable downside over the 4' 4 bank.

The dimmer knob:
This deserves its own accolades as the dimmer is fanatastic. I have a couple SkyPanels and the dimmers on those are less than ideal. I know what Arri was trying to do but (to me) it's a little awkward with the speed ramping. Kino however made it so the standard scrolling of the knob does a really fine adjustment of 1% at a time. If you push the knob in and turn it rapidly makes course adjustments of 5% jumps at a quicker pace. It's really intuitive and just works well. Predictable outcome every turn Vs Arri which can be a guessing game.

Mounting:
Maintaining the baby receiver was great. The SkyPanels are killer for so many similar reasons but they are heavy and require junior hardware. (But they are twice as bright). In applications where an old kino fat boy fixture would play, these can utilize the same hardware and rigging. When the ballast is mounted to the unit it still isn't light, but it's not heavy in the way a SkyPanel is.

Truly I see no downside to these fixtures. So happy the dust has finally settled in the LED panel market and the Select line was standing amidst the settling earth.

ProsVersatility.
ConsNone.
